The Business of Alt’s Business Cards: My Party In A Pillow Box

January 31, 2013

Alt Summit Business Cards, The Proper Pinwheel, Letterpress Cards, Bears Eat Berries Press

Business cards are a HUGE deal at Alt Summit. I had heard that, but I didn’t know what to expect. Then I got there and started exchanging. What. The. Crap. I can’t believe how talented and creative everyone is! Yesterday, I shared a few of my faves that had the “Best Accessory”. Mine fall in the accessory category, and I thought it would be fun to share how they were created! Aside from working with the printer, Laura from Bears Eat Berries Press, I wanted to include something that would be memorable and that people would associate with me.

So I decided to sew 160 individual garlands. Again. What. The. Crap. I guess people could associate “over-the-top-and-in-your-face” with me. How great.

Let’s start from the beginning. I tweeted about a month ago that I was in a bind and was looking for a letterpress printer. Suggestions were given and I happened upon Laura’s press, Bears Eat Berries. Holy moly. The girl is talented! She’s a total rockstar who walks you through every little detail. I was in a pinch and she saved me. She SAVED me! Joy helped me finalize the logo and design and then I just told Laura what I wanted and she went for it. I even asked her if she wouldn’t mind taking a few photos of the action, and she agreed. Rockstar, right? See pics below:

Isn’t that amazing? I would just talk out of my butt and pretend to explain what just happened. But I don’t know what just happened. So I won’t try to fake it for you. If you are a letterpress printer, please email me and explain the details of actual letterpress. I am fascinated. Alt Summit Business Cards, The Proper Pinwheel, Letterpress, Bears Eat Berries Press

Once the cards made it to me, I knew I wanted to add some little DIY to them. Gold leaf? Painted edge? Stickers? Cash? So many options. I decided to package them up in pillow boxes with a little garland, some confetti, and paper shreds. A party-on-the-fly, if you will. Paper garlands are usually very easy to make. You cut the shapes and use a sewing machine to stitch together. So easy, right? About 40 garlands in, I was regretting my decision. I almost gave up, but a great friend reminded me that I was going to the MECCA for handmade beauty and that I would meet people who would appreciate these paper goods. So I kept pluggin’ along. 20 hours later and with over 900 feet of garland, we were finished. We stuffed the pillow boxes full of the goods and went to sleep. For like an hour.

Don’t you just love the blind cake on the back? That’s definitely my fave. I made 160 little pillow box kits because I planned to meet and chat with that many people. I met TONS of people, but I wanted to be able to really have a conversation and exchange the elusive biz cards. I didn’t really think about how I would pack these suckers. I ended up filling an entire carry-on and half my checked bag with these babies. To hand them out, I carried around an extra purse that could pass as a bowling bag. Nothing was in it but cards. But it was worth it.

It was a lot of work, but people love paper. If I gave you one, I’d love to see a pic of the garland at your place – office or home! Tag me: @properpinwheel! If you happened to throw them in the trash, that’s okay. I already cried about that possibility and that was before I gave any out. I’m glad I made these. I know that people appreciate it and that they’ll remember “the ridiculous girl who gave me a garland’. At least I hope they will…

The Business of Business Cards - Best Accessory Alt 2013

I said it yesterday. I’ll say it again. Alt is like the Fashion Week of paper. I hear that business cards were a big deal at Alt, but these people pulled out ALL the stops! It was just crazy! I felt like a collector. I exchanged cards with so many people and you just can post ‘em all in a day! I’m splitting them up into categories and sharing a few of my faves in each. First up today: Best Accessory. The folks above accessorized their cards with paper ornaments, mini sewing kits, tiny animal birthday candles, mini party kits, and more! I seriously died.

Starting from the top:

Sad note: Ashley from Sugar & Cloth had adorable cards and I somehow didn’t get one! And we were roomies! If you got her card, please send me a pic so I can admire it in a cyber way! They were little kits filled with DIY supplies she uses on a regular basis – twine, glitter, and clothespins! Ah!

There were SO many cards and SO many people. I’m so sad that I didn’t get to talk to everyone. I know I’m missing out on some other awesome cards out there. These are just a few of my faves.

Did you go to Alt? Did you do a card round-up? Link it in the comments! I’d love to see it! I’m sharing all of the details about my cards and how they were made tomorrow. See you then!

First Alt recap right here.

Alt Summit Recap 1: Lessons Learned

Hey everyone! I’m back from Alt and have had a little more sleep. I’m feeling much more pleasant today. Thank goodness! You know when you don’t sleep for a week and then everything starts to look black and white and start to shake? Tell me you know what I’m talking about… Anywho, I’m back on the blog bandwagon and am ready to share lots of the details from Alt Summit. This year was a whirlwind. From planning The Hello Social (more details on that next week! It was a hoppin’ bash, let me tell you!), to staying up til 2:30am with my roomies EVERY NIGHT, some amazing experiences were had. I made a small graphic explaining the top things I took away, but read on to learn more about what I did and who I stalked!

Alt 11

First of all, I had THE BEST time. I’ve been looking forward to this conference since the beginning of 2012. I wanted to go to Alt Summit 2012, but couldn’t swing it and didn’t dare to. And I kicked myself everyday afterward. You guys! If you think that you aren’t big enough or that nobody knows who you are, you’re wrong! Size doesn’t matter. Determination does. If you want to go to Alt or any other conference, do it. Sign up. Get out there and meet people, for heaven’s sake! Companies are waiting for someone like you to walk along and say, “Hey, company! I’m talented! I’m awesome! This is what I got and I want to work with you!” There is a job and a place for everyone in blogland.

The Classic Alt Summit Hangover

January 29, 2013

The Classic Alt Summit Hangover

It came as fast as it went. I’ve spent the last several months preparing for the BIGGEST event, Alt Summit. I’ve missed sleep. I’ve spent money. I’ve eaten many a Jordan Almond. It’s been a little insane at our house. And then last week, I left for Utah and spent a few days with some of the most talented bloggers in the UNIVERSE! As an Alt-virgin, I wasn’t sure what to expect. I can tell you that I had some great experiences and made some of the best friends.

I’m taking a day to collect my thoughts, but will have two posts for you tomorrow. In the morning, I’ll share the things I learned and the memories I made. In the afternoon, we’re going to be talkin’ about those amazing business cards. Seriously, you guys. Alt is like the fashion week of paper. It’s a little crazy. And I loved every card I saw.

While I bounce back from my lack of sleep and detox from Diet Coke (never gonna happen), take a minute to view the #altsummit instagram and twitter feed. You can see all the glory there. You may even catch a pic or two of my crazy dance moves. Legendary, I tell you. :)

See y’all tomorrow.

I’m headed off to girl’s camp. I mean Alt Summit.

January 23, 2013

pink hearts

I’m sure you could tell that things have been AWFULLY quite ’round here. Why? Because I have been prepping up the wazoo for Alt Summit. It starts today and I’m kicking it off by hosting a welcome party, The Hello Social. I haven’t slept in days. My fingers are permanently claw-figured (from sewing 900 ft. of garland! Biz cards! Sheesh!). And I’m an emotional time-bomb. All you have to do is look at me and I’ll lose it!

Now that Alt is upon us, I plan to cheer up and and learn like crazy. I plan to be an informational sponge and I hope to get so much out of this conference. I want to make this blog here the b-e-s-t and I want to hear tips and tricks from pros. Okay. I really just want to party and get chocolate-wasted, but still!

Things are going to be even more silent for the next few days as I stalk all of my fave bloggers and drug them bribe them convince them to be my friend. I’ll be sharing a few tidbits of the goings on here, but things are going to really be hot over on twitter and insta. So if you want to see pictures of Jessica Alba (oh yeah. She’s coming to Alt. Ain’t no thang.), or pics of all the food I plan to eat, those are the places to be! I’ll be posting regular updates and will try to make it feel like you’re there with me! I mean, I can’t stalk these bloggers alone! Can I?

Going to Alt Summit? Come To The Hello Social!

January 16, 2013

The Hello Social, Alt Summit, West Elm, Salt Lake City, The Proper Pinwheel, Lulu The Baker

Welp. The cat’s outta the bag, people. I’m a party animal. You probably didn’t know that about me. But it’s true. I’ve teamed up with Melissa of Lulu The Baker and we’ve decided to throw a party at Alt Summit! Actually, it’s technically before Alt Summit as it starts a few hours before the kick-off dinners do. And we’re calling it The Hello Social!

Both Melissa and I are new to Alt (First years! Three points for Gryffindor!), and we wanted to create a little gathering for other bloggers to meet and mingle before the conference actually begins. It’s kind of like when you go to girl’s camp and you don’t know anyone. It can be a little awkward. We wanted to bypass that so that everyone is best friends before we all head off to Alt!

Melissa contacted me a few months ago with the idea for throwing the party. After many late night hours via skype, we started to form a plan. Slowly, The Hello Social started to come together! And now it’s a full-blown bash that we want YOU to attend! I’m super stoked to say that we’ve partnered with West Elm and the party is going to be there. At West Elm. A party. That I’m throwing. At West Elm. Can you tell I’m a little awe-struck? We’ve actually partnered with several awesome companies and this party is gonna be good.

Take a look:

The Hello Social, Alt Summit, The Proper Pinwheel, Lulu The Baker, West Elm

Because I can’t properly gauge cyber-measurements, a few of those logos up there are a bit small. Dangit! Below is a list of our awesome sponsors. The theme for the partay is obviously “Hello” so click on over to their shops and see if you can guess what we’ll be giving ya!

There will be a hot chocolate bar! What? That’s right. Word on the street is that it’s freezing in Utah, so what better way to warm up than with a cup of hot cocoa. The Ticket Kitchen has generously donated their famous chocolate sticks in several gourmet flavors. I don’t know if I’ll be able to control myself. I may eat 25% of the chocolate before the event gets here. My apologies in advance.

There will also be some delicious goodies from Les Madeleines Patisserie Cafe. If you ever visit Salt Lake City, you need to stop there and eat every baked good in sight. I’m dreaming about the pain au chocolat. I would marry carbohydrates if it was socially acceptable. Chef Romina is the head honcho over there and she is carefully crafting up some delicious treats for each attendee. There will be a few different treats from Les Madeleines including macarons. Macarons, you guys. It’s an event for bloggers so you have to have those. Am I right? Would you believe I’ve never had one? They’re just so pretty. And I never get to eat at classy places that serve Macarons. It’s usually corn dogs and fry sauce for this girl.

Smilebooth wants in on the action so get ready for some fun photo-ops! And some recognizable decor from Geronimo will be there as well! There will be treats. There will be prizes. There will be fun conversation. There will be LOTS of color. We’re also giving away fun party bags to the first 125 there! Crazy-awesome Lesley from Whimsybags is screen-printing each bag and we can’t WAIT to give ‘em out! There are too many good prizes going into these bags. I’m this close to just telling you. THIS CLOSE!

Melissa & I have been DIYing our socks off to get ready for this event. To keep yourself in the loop, follow the hashtag #hellosocial on twitter and instagram! We’ll be regularly tweetin’ and grammin’ about all of the preparations going into The Hello Social. It’s gon’ be cray.

The Hello Social, Alt Summit, The Proper Pinwheel, Lulu The Baker, West Elm

I want to give a HUGE “Thank You” to the folks at West Elm. They’re the best people to plan a party with, I tell you! They’ve been such a big help to Melissa & I, and we are so grateful to our sponsors for helping us create a super memorable bash. AHHHHHH!

We’ve also been working with some killer designers to bring you different printed aspects at the party. Big ole’ GRACIAS to Sarah Fritzler, Kristie Garner, and Sarah Khandjian for designing different decor and invitation elements! We can’t wait to share it all!

Guys, I’m dying to spill ALL of the beans but I want to keep some things secret until the event! All I can say is that if you can swing it, you need to get there a week from today. The party is open-house style from 3:30-5:00pm so I’ll see ya there! Click here to RSVP!

DIY Meringue Cupcake Toppers

January 9, 2013

Meringue, Cupcake Toppers, Meringue Letters, The Proper Pinwheel, Cupcake DIY

I’m a bit obsessed with cupcakes. I’m a bit obsessed with sugar if I’m being honest.  They are the perfect treat to whip up every Tuesday night. What? You don’t do that? Whether you make cupcakes regularly or only make them on special occasions, we can all agree that it’s so fun to decorate them. Um, and eat them. ;)

If you’ve got a party coming up and need some custom cupcake toppers, look no further than your own kitchen. You most likely have the ingredients to make meringue. Pipe out any letters or numbers and get to toppin’ those cupcakes! (Recipe for meringue at the bottom of post.)

I made meringues for our New Year’s Eve party, and while they didn’t taste good, they sure were pretty. It gave me the idea to create other shapes and letters and use them as cupcake toppers! Now, I’m addicted and am piping up a storm in my kitchen. Take an hour or two and make your own. They really pretty up a cupcake. And if there’s anything I’ve learned, it’s that outward appearances are what matter in life. ;)

Meringue Cupcake Toppers

  • 4 egg whites
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp cream of tartar
  • 1 1/2 cup of sugar
  • food coloring

Let the egg whites stand at room temperature for 30 minutes. Add the salt and cream of tartar and beat in a mixer on high until light and fluffy. The tips should start to curl. Slowly add the sugar a little at a time while beating on high. Beat meringue until stiff peaks form. Add food coloring. Place into a piping bag fitted with star tip. Pipe onto cookie sheet lined with parchment paper. Bake meringue at 225 degrees F for one hour. Turn oven off and let meringue cool in oven for at least 60 minutes. Remove from oven and place letters/shapes on top off frosted cupcakes!
