Happy post-Thanksgiving, my friends! Did ya have enough turkey? Did ya have enough pie? I ate several large bags of homemade rolls. All by myself. I’m so proud of that. I’m happy to tell you that MISSION: MERRY is back for 2013! Do you remember last year? Lots of holiday projects filled these cyber pages the entire month of December! We (me and Vita) decided to bring it back this year so ready yo’selves for some holiday happiness! You’ll want to check back daily to see what’s hip and happenin’ for Christmas!

DIY Tinted Champagne Flutes

New Year’s Eve is just around the corner. Do you have your resolutions in order? Do you have your toasts prepared? I always love ending the holiday season at a good New Year’s Eve bash. My parents always have a big party and our entire family comes over. We play games, laugh, eat, eat, and EAT. I know many of you will be having parties next week to kick off the big 2013. Why not give your champagne flutes a little makeover? With just a little Martha Stewart Glass Paint, your glass can go from drabulous to fabulous in one day!

To make your own tinted champagne flutes you’ll need:

  • champagne flutes (mine from IKEA)
  • Martha Stewart Glass Paint
  • foam paint brush

Starting at the bottom of each flute, paint a thin layer of the glass paint around and work your way to the top. Make sure to paint thin even if you feel like it’s not getting good coverage. You’ll paint a few coats on there to really give it a tint. I started at the bottom and faded to the middle of fluted part of the glass. Leave about 1.5 inches from the top clear to give the glass a tinted ombre effect. Let dry for 24 hours.

Once the paint has dried, place flutes in cool oven and heat to 350 degrees F. Once oven is heated, bake for 30 minutes and then shut oven off. Let oven cool completely before removing flutes. Wait 72 hours before using.

And that’s it! The paint has cured to the glass and now you have some lovely tinted flutes to ring in the new year! Happy day!

DIY Gold-leafed Greeting Cards

You did it. It’s Christmas Eve and you forgot to send out cards. Or maybe you didn’t forget, but you were too busy saving lives. That’s what happened to me. Luckily, these cards are sooooo easy. So easy it hurts. These DIY Gold-leafed Greeting Cards are just the right amount of classiness when it comes to Christmas cards.

To make your own gold-leafed cards you’ll need:

Using the glue pen from the gold-leafing kit, write out Christmas-y words like “Merry”, “Joy”, or “Money”. Write the letters in all caps and let the glue dry for a minute or two before pressing the gold sheet to the glue. Press the gold leaf down firmly and rub against the glue. After five minutes, take the foam paint brush and rub it against the gold leaf. The gold leaf will start to flake and leave only the glued pieces adhered to the glue.

With Christmas less than one week away, it’s time to get crackin’ and get wrappin’. Wrapping presents is one of the things I look forward to most during the holiday season. You can basically slap anything festive on a box and it will look beautiful! I’ve shared a few ideas below for some fun and easy holiday gift wrap. We’ve got ombre tissue paper fringe gift bags. There’s reindeer pom pom wrapping paper. Clay gift tags. Jingle Bells & sequins even make an appearance. And there is even a download for you guys at the bottom of this lovely post! Downloadable gift tags are the gift that keep on giving the whole year long.

To make your own tissue fringe gift bags you’ll need:

  • brown paper bags
  • tissue paper in neutral colors (I stole these from the Ikea checkout…)
  • fringe scissors (regular scissors are great too!)
  • hot glue gun & stick

Cut your tissue paper into 3″ tall strips that are the width of the bag. Hot glue them to the bag starting at the bottom with the darkest colored paper first. Layer the tissue paper towards the top as you go. Once the hot glue has dried, use your fringe scissors or regular scissors to cut fringe on each layer. It’s so pinata-like! Work your way to the top. Tie with a wooden gift tag, some baker’s twine, and give to yourself. Errr, I mean give to your loved ones?

This reindeer pom wrapping paper is a new spin on the popular pom paper this year. Get a reindeer stamp from Hobby Lobby, stamp it onto some brown kraft paper, and hot glue pom poms in any color to their noses. So easy! This one is definitely my fave. I’ve wrapped all of my presents to myself in this. :)

This is one of my favorite holiday projects so far. I was perusing through Anthro one lunch hour (like I usually do!), and happened upon the most beautiful log candles that were gold. The entire thing was wax, but it had a bark-like texture and was stunning. If I bought those candles, I would never light them because they’re too beautiful! Ack!

These logs are a homage to those lovely Anthropologie candles that I can never have. All you need are some wooden logs (search Bing for the closest lumberyard near you) and some gold spray paint! It’s also handy if you have a chainsaw, but most lumberyards will cut the wood down for you.

Cut the logs to desired size and spray paint gold. That’s it! If you want to be really over the top, you can use a drill press to create small holes in the tops of each log. Stick a tea light in there and you may as well call yourself Anthropologie! So easy. These projects just keep getting easier and easier, don’t they?

Holy Holiday Cookie – The Stained Glass & Cut-out Edition

We are just loving cookies around here. From the spritz cookies this morning, to these fun stained glass beauties, there is a cookie here for everyone. Take the sugar cookie dough (recipe here) and make fun cut-outs and decorate your cookies like crazy!

To make your own stained glass cookies you’ll need:

Roll out your the sugar cookie dough to 1/8 – 1/4 inch thickness. Place on lightly floured saran-wrap. Seal and chill for 15-20 minutes. Turn out onto lightly floured surface and cut out cookies in assorted shapes and sizes. Using small cutters or a knife, Remove the center of each cookie. Place on cookie sheet lined with parchment paper and bake at 350 degrees F for 6 minutes.

While cookies are in the oven crush assorted jolly ranchers and/or peppermints. After 6 minutes, remove cookies from oven and sprinkle jolly ranchers and peppermints in center of each cookie. Return cookies to oven and do not look away! Candy will melt and start to bubble. It will usually fill the center (but don’t burn!) after 3 minutes. Remove cookies from oven and let cool.

To make the circular peppermint cookies, cut out a circle in the center of each cookie that is slightly larger than the peppermint. Bake cookies for 6 minutes. Remove from oven and place peppermint in center of each cookie. Return to the oven and watch the peppermint melt. Don’t remove until the peppermint has filled the center. This usually takes 3-5 minutes.

Now you have some gorgeous stained glass cookies! Seriously. The cuteness factor just went up, like, 100 points!

Don’t want to worry about crushing your candies? Color the dough instead! Cut out in different shapes, brush with egg wash, and sprinkle with sanding sugar.

Place different shapes on top of each other, making sure that top layer isn’t too thick. Baking fuses the two layers together. Fun, right? Spend an afternoon in the kitchen and whip out hundreds of little cookies. Your neighbors will LOVE you for it. :)

Holy Holiday Cookie: The Spritz Edition

I’m a baker, and I’m an eater. I will spend hours/days in the kitchen slaving away over hot stoves to make delicious holiday treats. Sometimes I eat those treats. Sometimes I don’t. It must be the people-pleaser in me. One treat that I love to devour is the holiday spritz cookie. These babies are so small and bite-sized that it’s tough not to eat 50+.

I have a cookie press that was given to me years ago. I only break it out at Christmas time because I used to believe it was so much work to make spritz cookies. But you know what? It’s not the actual spritzing (terminology?) that takes time, it’s the decorating afterward! I wanted to make some fancy spritz for my friends and co-workers. Spritz cookies always seem so magical. You really only need one batch of dough to make all of the cookies I’m going to share with you today. First up, the spritz. Check back later today for cut-outs and STAINED GLASS COOKIES! Oh yeah. They’ll be amazin’.

To make your own holiday spritz cookies you’ll need:

  • 1 c. unsalted butter, room temperature
  • 1 c. granulated sugar
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 3 c. all-purpose flour, plus more for rolling and cutting
  • 1 cookie press (mine found here!)
  • sanding sugar and other decorations (optional)
  • powdered sugar glaze (recipe below)
In a large bowl, with an electric mixer, cream butter, sugar, and salt until light and fluffy. Add the egg and beat well to combine. Mix in vanilla. With mixer on low speed, add the flour and mix just until incorporated. Don’t overmix!
Fill the tube of your cookie press with dough (doesn’t need to be chilled). Press cookies out individually on cookie sheet lined with parchment paper. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F and bake cookies for 7-11 minutes until completely baked. Cool on baking sheets.
Once cookies are cooled, decorate with powdered sugar glaze and embellish to your heart’s desire.
To make your own powdered sugar glaze you’ll need:
  • 1 c. powdered sugar
  • 2 Tbsp. water
  • food coloring
Combine sugar and water and mix well. Add more water as needed for an easy-to-pour consistency. Tint with food coloring and drizzle over cookies or dip top halves of cookies in glaze.

Recipe: World’s Most Delicious Toffee

Toffee. Toffee. Toffee. I make you every December. And every December, you make people fall in love with me. Even strangers on the street want some of this. (The toffee, you sicko!) This is by far my most prized and cherished recipe. I’ve kept it secret for all these years, but if I want you to like me, I’m going to have to give this up. This is the easiest and most delicious thick toffee you will ever make. I don’t even use a candy thermometer! I know! I’m like Martha Stewart! ;)

I’ve stalled long enough.

To make your own toffee you’ll need:

  • 7-8 large hershey’s chocolate bars
  • 4 sticks of butter
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 1 1/2 tsp. vanilla
  • 1 c. finely crushed cashews
  • 1/2 c. coarsely chopped cashews

On a large cookie sheet, sprinkle 1/2 c. of the finely crushed cashews and lay the chocolate bars evenly on top. Place the cookie sheet in the oven at 200 degrees F and let the chocolate melt. Once the bars have melted, remove cookie sheet from oven. In a large sauce pan or stock pot, combine butter, sugar, and vanilla. Bring to a boil and watch like a hawk. Stir slowly and constantly. Toffee will be ready to pour when the color starts to change to a darker brown. This takes about 12 minutes. Once the toffee color changes, add 1/2 c. coarsely chopped cashews and mix well. Immediately spread over chocolate bars and sprinkle with remaining cashews. Let set for a few hours. You can speed up the process in the freezer if you are impatient like me. :)

Once ready, use a sharp knife to break off jagged pieces. Toffee is thick so be careful when cutting! Devour. Wrap for friends and win the “neighbor of the year” award.

Recipe: Peppermint Bark

Confession: I hate peppermint. I only use it as a breath-freshener. I hate the combination of chocolate and mint. So Andes mints are obviously out. I never EVER eat peppermint bark, but I’m obsessed with it because it’s so pretty. I love the red and white marbling. Gorgeous. Layer in some milk or dark chocolate and that’s one lovely dessert. I make it every year and distribute to friends and family. While I’m not a fan of the stuff, I made this and it was taste-tested by several peppermint bark connoisseurs. And they raved about it and went on and on. So I think it’s safe to share the recipe with y’all.

To make your own Peppermint Bark you’ll need:

  • white chocolate (1 bag of chips or 1 whole bark is fine)
  • milk chocolate (1 bag of chips or 1 whole bark is fine)
  • 1 1/2 cups crushed peppermints
  • red gel coloring
  • wax paper

In a microwave-safe bowl, melt all of the milk chocolate by heating and stirring every 30 seconds. Once all the milk chocolate is melted, spread it out on the wax paper in a thin, even layer. Let the chocolate set up. You can place the wax paper on a cookie sheet and place it in the fridge, or just come back in 20-30 minutes. Next, melt the white chocolate exactly how you melted the milk chocolate. Add 1 1/2 cups of crushed peppermints and mix well with the chocolate. Pour the white chocolate and peppermint mixture over the milk chocolate making sure to spread evenly. Working quickly, drop several drops of red gel coloring on top of the white chocolate. Take a toothpick, knife, or a spoon and swirl the red around the surface creating a marbled effect. Sprinkle with more crushed peppermints and let set.

That’s it! Now break up and package for your friends. Or just eat the whole pan yourself. There is no judgment here…
